The Mental Wellness Summit

Free Online August 10-17, 2015

Lithium, bipolar and heavy metal detox on Mental Wellness Summit

Hi Kathy,

Just a quick reminder that The Mental Wellness Summit starts tomorrow August 10th.
  • I’m sharing snippets from 2 more excellent interviews (register for free below)
  • And if you know you want to purchase the interviews/transcripts, now is the time to do so - grab them at the BEFORE EVENT summit special price (details below)

Ross McKenzie Co-founder of Mental Wellness Summit, Filmmaker of Bipolarized: Journey Beyond Med, is interviewed by Dr. John Dempster. Here are a few snippets from the compelling interview with Ross:
  • I was playing soccer. Our soccer team in college, we were number one in the country. And then 6 months later, I’m at this seminar. I’m having this huge euphoric bliss. And then I’m in a straightjacket in a white-padded room. I’m like okay, what on Earth just happened to my life?
  • I’m just watching my life pass me by. And the expression I think of how it felt for so many years is I felt like the walking dead without the actual benefits of being dead. It was a nightmare. It was like being trapped in my body. And it was brutal.
  • So I had this big wake up call. One of the things with lithium is that you have to get your kidneys tested. It’s very hard on your organs. And you have to get blood work done just to make sure that you’re not in toxic levels. My first year of taking it, I actually almost died of lithium toxicity. It was so bad. I actually felt my body shutting down from that, which was terrifying.
Ross talks about detoxing from prescription lithium and how he was then able to start filming his story and making the movie Bipolarized and how there is this grassroots awakening happening right now [in integrative mental health]. His message is very clear:
  • become your own best doctor. Become an informed consumer, do your research
  • we can actually address root cause symptoms, heal these symptoms. These diseases are not for life.
  • So there’s a place for all of it... an integrated mental health holistic model. And to have that be the norm on the planet. What an incredible thing that would be
Ross also says:

I know I can speak from experience now, too, having gone through the [heavy metal] chelation process. There are studies now saying it’s affecting the central nervous system. It can cause anxiety. It can actually lead to psychosis.

During the summit, Ross McKenzie also interviews Dr. John Dempster, who is his doctor and helped him address his high levels of heavy metals - both mercury and lead. Here are some snippets from this interview:“Heavy Metal Detoxification and Functional Medicine”:

  • Heavy metals are a neurotoxin. And they’re an endocrine disruptor. And in English, that means that they are going to break a lot of the chemicals, such as your neurotransmitters, which make you feel great. They make you sad. They make you sleep. They make you feel energized. They make you focused. This is your dopamine, your serotonin, your GABAs.
  • there's a difference between what we call a toxic metal burden, which means much in your body's tissues, versus a heavy metal toxicity, which is a bit more in the acute state of where it circulating your blood.
  • And if we aren't being careful and we’re mobilizing these toxic agents and they get stuck in these organs, we're going to have some kidney function issues that can affect all sorts of other aspects of our health. So this is where it does have to be done with somebody who is been trained properly in the proper detoxification programs and processes.
Dr. Dempster goes on to talk about functional testing, food, and the importance of healing the gut, sleep, nature and much more - for anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and ADHD.

Join The Mental Wellness Summit, online, August 10-17, 2015, to hear both these interviews.

Perspective from Behind the Receptionist's Desk:

Ulrich Knorr, ND

The first time I talked to Dr. Knorr was by phone.  It was evident right away that he was easy to talk to and he listened to me.  I had seen his photo on the clinic’s website, so I knew what he looked like.  So I was putting his voice with his image as we spoke.
After I started working with Dr. Knorr, I learned that he is dedicated to the care of his patients.  He prepares for each appointment and does extra research or physician consults if he thinks it will benefit the patient.  He is diligent in finding treatment that will help a patient, and does not give up if the disease is stubborn or tricky.  His mind is constantly searching for ideas that may help a patient heal.  Dr. Knorr is motivated to be a good doctor from a sincere interest in and caring for his patients.
Dr. Knorr was six years old when he moved to the United States from Germany with his family.  I have had new patients ask me if he was from South Africa, or Scandinavia.  Dr. Knorr speaks English, German, and French.  It is fun for me to listen to Dr. Knorr speak another language with a patient, even though I can’t understand what they are saying.  I took German for a year in ninth grade, so I recognize a few words. : )
Dr. Knorr was raised in Iowa and his love for healthy living was nurtured by his parents and family.  He took several herbal medicine courses in Northern California during college, and his interest in Naturopathic Medicine was launched.  He pursued his interest in natural medicine by investigating the four year degree programs in Naturopathic Medicine.
The six principles of Naturopathic Medicine resonated with Dr. Knorr, 1. First Do No Harm 2.
Restore and Support Inherent Healing Systems 3. Find the Underlying Cause/s of Illness 4. Treat the Whole Person 5. Adopt Prevention 6. Emphasize Wellness.  He began his Naturopathic Medical studies in 1991 at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon.  His focus during these studies was herbal medicine and homeopathy and he completed his courses in 1995.
The following year Dr. Knorr completed his residency at Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington.  He enjoyed working at the Natural Health Clinic of Bastyr University and seeing how natural medicine benefited peoples’ lives.  Dr. Knorr practiced in Montrose, Colorado for one year before moving to Utah, and has practiced in Utah since 1998.  He has been at the Eastside Natural Health Clinic since 2000.

Dynamics of Patient Care

I am enthusiastic about helping patients find their path towards health and healing. I like to combine an analytical and intuitive approach. For me, intuitive means what I feel and pick up energetically from the patient. Gathering data and combining it with a sensing approach is often effective in addressing the needs of my patients.

I understand that educating my patients is essential. Acknowledging and listening to patients is powerful in its own right. Education helps patients understand why certain dietary and lifestyle choices will serve them better. It does not cease to amaze me how powerful dietary shifts such as eliminating certain food groups has affected many of my patients overall health status.

I like to assist my patients in expanding their awareness about their relationships they have with themselves, their loved ones, and their own thought patterns. Developing an understanding about these dynamics can often be quite helpful, educational, and lead to greater ease in one’s life.

It is my conviction that there are three pillars of health. The first two are created by daily healthy choices in your diet and lifestyle. The third pillar is creating awareness and compassion about how your mind operates and about how your heart feels. Creating balance in these three areas: diet, lifestyle, and harmony of the mind & heart create a solid foundation for your health and vitality.

Perception from Behind the Receptionist's Desk:

Hey Everyone,

My name is Kathy Hoggan, and I have been working with Dr. Knorr since February of 2014 as a receptionist at the Eastside Natural Health Clinic.  I am working part-time while I go to graduate school at the University of Utah in the Department of Health Promotion and Education.  I appreciate and enjoy the opportunity of working at the clinic and going to school!

Approximately 10 years ago I wanted to find a new doctor.  A Naturopathic Physician was what I was looking for, but I didn’t know it at the time.  I wanted a doctor that would look for the causes of disease instead of just treating my symptoms with pharmaceutical drugs.  I wanted medical treatment that looked at how my body systems worked together as a whole, which I found out later is a holistic approach.  I wanted to use herbs and supplements to help my body heal itself more naturally.

I found the following information about Naturopathic Medicine on The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians website:  http://www.naturopathic.org/content.asp?contentid=59

Definition of Naturopathic Medicine:

“Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care profession, emphasizing prevention, treatment, and optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and substances that encourage individuals’ inherent self-healing process.  The practice of naturopathic medicine includes modern and traditional, scientific, and empirical methods.”

The Following Principles are the Foundation of Naturopathic Medical Practice:

“The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae): Naturopathic medicine recognizes an inherent self-healing process in people that is ordered and intelligent. Naturopathic physicians act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate and augment this inherent self-healing process.
Identify and Treat the Causes (ToIle Causam): The naturopathic physician seeks to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.
First Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere): Naturopathic physicians follow three guidelines to avoid harming the patient:
·         Utilize methods and medicinal substances which minimize the risk of harmful side effects, using the least force necessary to diagnose and treat;
·         Avoid when possible the harmful suppression of symptoms; and
·         Acknowledge, respect, and work with individuals’ self-healing process.
Doctor as Teacher (Docere): Naturopathic physicians educate their patients and encourage self-responsibility for health. They also recognize and employ the therapeutic potential of the doctor-patient relationship.
Treat the Whole Person: Naturopathic physicians treat each patient by taking into account individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social, and other factors. Since total health also includes spiritual health, naturopathic physicians encourage individuals to pursue their personal spiritual development.
Prevention: Naturopathic physicians emphasize the prevention of disease by assessing risk factors, heredity and susceptibility to disease, and by making appropriate interventions in partnership with their patients to prevent illness.”

Naturopathic Physician’s Oath

I dedicate myself to the service of humanity as a practitioner of the art and science of Naturopathic medicine.
I will honor my teachers and all who have preserved and developed this knowledge, and dedicate myself to supporting the growth and evolution of Naturopathic medicine.
I will endeavor to continually improve my abilities as a healer through study, reflection, and genuine concern for humanity.
I will impart knowledge of the advanced healing arts to dedicated colleagues and students.
Through precept, lecture, and example, I will assist and encourage others to strengthen their health, reduce risks for disease, and preserve the health of our planet for ourselves, our families, and future generations.
According to my best ability and judgment, I will use methods of treatment, which follow the principles of Naturopathic medicine:
·         First of all, to do no harm.
·         To act in cooperation with the Healing Power of Nature.
·         To address the fundamental causes of disease.
·         To heal the whole person through individualized treatment.
·         To teach the principles of healthy living and preventive medicine.

I will conduct my life and the practice of Naturopathic health care with vigilance, integrity, and freedom from prejudice.
I will abstain from voluntary acts of injustice and corruption.
I will keep confidential whatever I am privileged to witness, whether professionally or privately, that should not be divulged.
With my whole heart, before this gathering of witnesses, as a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, I pledge to remain true to this oath.
